Installing the trash receptacle kit on your John Deere Z5 mower can make yard work much more efficient. This kit allows you to easily collect trash, debris, or clippings as you mow, keeping your workspace clean and organized. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the installation step-by-step, ensuring everything fits together properly for a solid, functional setup.

  • Trash receptacle bucket
  • Grabber tool
  • Carriage head bolts, nuts, and small screws

Tools needed:

Mounting the Main Bracket and Plate

To start, locate the large bracket in the kit. This is what will be mounted to the front right caster wheel arm on your Z5 mower. Begin by positioning the bracket over the caster wheel arm and ensure it's seated securely in place. Once that’s done, you’ll attach the plate that will hold the trash receptacle. The curved side of the plate should be facing upward, as this is where your bucket will rest.

Next, grab your Carriage head bolts. Insert them from the bottom of the bracket into the plate, ensuring the square neck of the bolt aligns with the square hole in the bracket. Start by getting all four bolts in place, tightening them by hand, and then insert the center bolt as well. You’ll want to use your 13mm wrench and socket to secure all the bolts and nuts, ensuring everything is tightened down snugly.

Mounting the Side Arms

Once the main bracket and plate are securely mounted, you’ll attach the two side arms. These arms will go on either side of the plate, and they help support the trash receptacle. Make sure the flat part of the brackets sits underneath the plate, with the bracket closest to the wheel being positioned on the outside of the machine. Use the same process as before, inserting the bolts from the top and tightening them down with your 13mm socket. Make sure the inward-facing side of the brackets points toward the center to properly hold the trash receptacle.

Mounting the Clamp

With the side arms installed, it’s time to mount the silver clamp that holds the grabber tool. Locate the small hole on the top side of the bracket. You’ll be using the small screw and nut provided in the kit to secure the clamp here. Insert the screw through the hole in the clamp and then through the bracket. Hold the nut in place while you use a Phillips head screwdriver and a 9mm wrench (or 11/32 socket) to tighten it up. Make sure the clamp is oriented correctly to hold the grabber tool securely.

Installing the Trash Receptacle and Grabber

Once the clamp is in place, you can slide the grabber tool into the clamp and lock it down. Next, grab the bucket and slide it between the two side arms, resting it on the plate. The trash receptacle should fit snugly between the brackets, and the curved edge of the plate will help hold it in place.

If you're concerned about the bucket or grabber coming loose in bumpy conditions, there are a couple of extra precautions you can take. The bracket holding the clamp has a small hole where you can attach a bungee cord to secure the grabber further. Similarly, there are holes on both sides of the main bracket where you can loop a bungee cord through the handle of the bucket. This will ensure that everything stays in place, even during rough terrain.
