The STIHL AutoCut® C26-2 trimmer head is a game-changer for those accustomed to manual spool units, which require removing the inner spool to insert new string. This upgrade, ideal for models ranging from the FS 55 to the FS 131 R, features an easy spool mechanism that allows for quick and effortless string reloading directly through the head, bypassing the need for disassembly.

About the C26-2 Head

Distinguished by two arrows on the outer edges of the spool and a corresponding line across the center, the AutoCut® C26-2 designates a clear path for string insertion. Aligning these markers creates a channel through which the trimming line can be fed from one side to the other, simplifying the process of achieving an even distribution of string on both sides. This simplicity significantly reduces downtime, especially when a fresh string is needed mid-task.

Loading the String

Before loading the string into the head, you will first need to choose and cut your string to the correct length. When doing this, keep in mind that the STIHL AutoCut® C26-2 head accommodates up to 26 feet of a .095-inch line or about 23 feet of a .105-inch line, catering to different trimming needs and preferences.

Once the string is cut, it's now time to load the STIHL AutoCut® C26-2 head. Turn its grey dial until the line running across its center aligns with the arrows on either side of the outer white portion of the trimmer head. Next, thread the string through the designated channel along the sides until it protrudes from the opposite side. The goal is to pull the string until there's an equal length on each side, roughly 10 feet each, laying the foundation for a balanced trim.

The unique feature of the STIHL AutoCut® C26-2 head is its easy winding mechanism. By pressing down and twisting the spool in the direction indicated by the slots on the center grey dial, the string winds itself inside the head. This action secures the string in place, readying the trimmer for use. This straightforward winding method stands in contrast to manual spool units, where restringing is often a time-consuming task.

Final Touches

With the string evenly distributed and wound, any excess length can be adjusted to the trimmer's specifications by simply trimming. This ensures the trimmer operates at peak efficiency, with the string length optimized for the best cutting performance.

The STIHL AutoCut® C26-2 represents a significant advancement in trimmer head technology, offering ease and efficiency in restringing that is unparalleled in manual spool units. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy more time perfecting your lawn and less time wrestling with the trimmer line.
