If you own a John Deere Z545R Zero-Turn Mower, you're probably familiar with its throttle system. But did you know there's a hidden trick that allows you to customize your mower's speed even further?

In this guide, we'll discuss this neat feature and show you how to set a fourth-speed setting using the Eco button. Keep reading to learn step-by-step.

Understanding the Throttle System

On the right-hand side of the Z545R, you'll find the throttle system. It comes with three preset buttons: Min, Eco, and Max. Each button corresponds to a specific RPM at which your engine will run. But here's the secret: you can actually set a custom speed using the Eco button. Let's dive into the steps.

Setting Your Custom Speed
  1. Starting the Mower: Start by turning on your Z545R mower.
  2. Accessing the Preset Speeds: Once started, your mower will be in the Min mode by default, indicated by a single bar on the left-hand side. Switching to Eco mode will raise the RPMs, and the Max button will take it to its highest setting.
  3. Entering Customization Mode: Here's where the magic happens. While in Eco mode, hold down the Max button. You'll notice the RPM bars start flashing, signaling you're in customization mode.
  4. Adjusting the Speed: With the bars flashing, use the Min and Max buttons to either decrease or increase the speed. Once you've chosen your desired speed, simply wait for the bars to stop flashing. This will lock in your custom speed.
  5. Accessing Your Custom Speed: Now, whenever you press the Min button, it will revert to the factory setting. But, if you hold down the Eco button, it will switch to your custom speed setting.

Recap and Tips

To quickly recap, turn on your mower, press the Eco button, and then hold down the Max button. Once in customization mode, adjust the speed using the Min and Max buttons. Wait for the RPM bars to stop flashing to lock in your custom speed.

This feature offers a level of customization that mimics the infinitely variable speeds of older mowers. While not everyone might use this, it's a handy trick for those who want more control over their mowing speed.
