Changing the headlights on your John Deere Riding Mower can seem like a daunting task, but the reality is quite the opposite. It's a straightforward and simple process that requires no tools. In this article, we'll walk you through the steps so you can confidently change the headlights on your mower at home.

Raising the Hood and Assessing the Old Headlights

To begin, raise the hood of your mower to gain access to the headlights. Once you're looking at the headlights, you can start removing the sockets and changing the bulbs. During this process, keep in mind that while these bulbs are designed for simple installation, you should be cautious if you're dealing with an older mower. The older your mower, the more brittle the plastic parts might be which could cause them to break easily. If a piece breaks off while you're removing the bulbs, it could be time to consider replacing the sockets as well.

Removing the Sockets

The removal process is simple: twist the socket to free it, gently pull out the old bulb, then disconnect the two wiring clips (Note: these wiring clips are not position-specific, so there's no need to worry about remembering which one goes on top or bottom later). At this point, you should have the socket and light bulb removed.

Replacing the Lights in the Sockets

Once you've removed the bulb and socket, you'll notice a small notch on the light bulbs that holds them into the socket. To remove the old light bulb from the socket, simply twist it until it comes free.

When installing the new bulb, align the two notches on the socket with the two small bumps on the metal portion of the bulb. Insert the bulb into the socket and twist it until it locks into place.

Re-installing the Sockets

With the new bulb securely in place, you're ready to re-install the socket. First, reconnect the electrical connectors, being careful not to break any brittle plastic. Next, notice the two tips, or wings, on the socket. These will lock the socket into the actual headlight location at the front of the mower. Align these with the notches on the headlight housing, insert the socket, and then turn it to lock it into place.
